03 10 2008 02 25 pm hey guys its once again been a long time and we are starting solid wire. The minimum aluminum thickness you should attempt is roughly 14 ga. Something with at least inches or more since it provides greater penetration. The 3g welding certification qualifies a welder to weld flat horizontal and vertical or 1g 2g and 3g positions also includes the 1f 2f and 3f positions without having to take the 1g and 2g certification.
I have a couple of bits of 10mm flat bar in a fillet. Flat and horizontal welds are fairly easy but vertical uphill welds contend. This welding position is considered mode difficult than a downhill weld. The upside down v is one of the most effective technique for vertical mig welding of lap and tee fillet welds.
Just knocked my wire feed down to 6 5 and had another go. Just trying a bit of vertical up mig welding. Vertical up mig welding an uphill welding position is when you start at the bottom of the joint and work your way upward. It works really well for dealing with thicker materials.
It is a slow process and requires patience. Aluminum is a tricky metal to weld with a mig welder because it takes more heat than mild steel usually in the range of 21 to 24 volts. When welding using the vertical up movement think of it as building a brick wall where you start by building a strong base and then gradually move upwards. Any thinner than that and you ll need a tig welder.
Sure there are other ways of making a good looking vertical uphill weld but for ensuring penetration as well as making a good looking uniform weld the upside down v is a good way to go.
